Why Northstar?

Northstar welcomes students with learning differences who have demonstrated difficulty in traditional schools with conventional teaching methods. We are proud to be the only school of our kind in the Richmond area. This site is a great place to start to explore Northstar, and we encourage you to visit us to learn more. Our goal is to provide you with as many opportunities to connect with us as we can. We look forward to meeting you and your student!

Who can apply?

There is no such thing as a “typical Northstar student.” Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and from all around the Greater Richmond area, each with his or her own unique abilities. Our K-12 student population includes, but is not limited to,
students who may be diagnosed with a learning challenge such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, auditory process disorders, Asperger Syndrome or other learning differences. We will enroll students with other difficulties as long as the student is well suited for our learning environment.

Northstar Academy will accept students whose past school experience has included behavior problems if, in the admission committee's judgment, they were primarily caused by academic failure and frustration or by school failure that often accompanies academic distress. However, we do not seek to enroll students with persistent or severe behavior difficulties stemming primarily from psychological or emotional problems.

The Admissions Process

The admissions process begins with an initial visit by the prospective student’s family. Our admissions team will meet with the family to learn more about the student and review his or her records and past school performance. If all parties agree that this would be a good match, then we will ask the prospective student to visit. One of the most important aspects is asking the child if he or she would like to be a part of the Northstar family. In order for a child to be truly successful, we believe the student should want to be here. After the student has visited and we have completed a thorough administrative review, our decision will be made. All new students who are accepted to Northstar Academy have a nine-week trial period to make sure that the school is, in fact, a good fit.

Application Deadlines

Northstar Academy employs a rolling admissions policy.  Applications may be submitted throughout the school year and student acceptance is based in part on active enrollment.
