THE STARLIGHT EXPRESS
Thanks to all who helped make the “Starlight Express” Gala on May 22, 2008, at the home of Susan and John Robinson, an overwhelming success! We raised well over $50,000 for the school. After enjoying the lovely food by Carlisle’s Culinary Connection, guests enjoyed music by pianist Bruce Sullivan. Later, they were treated to a performance by the Northstar Academy chorus, directed by Jane Barthurst. Although the student choral performance was the highlight of a wonderful evening, Jimmy Barrett, morning radio talk show host for WRVA1140AM, certainly added excitement to the festivities, challenging guests to purchase a one-of-a-kind star hand-made by a Northstar student. If twelve stars were sold, Jimmy agreed to do a “cannon ball” into the Robinsons’ pool which was the backdrop for the event. At that time, the air temperature was cool, and the water temperature was much colder. The crowd rose to the challenge and the twelve stars were sold, raising an additional $12,000 for the school. Jimmy plunged into the pool fully clothed. Showing what a great sport he is, Jimmy even jumped into the pool a second time when the photographer worried that she might not have captured the jump (in fact, she had, as you can see from the photo below).
