Why Northstar?

Extracurricular activities like team sports, dances, clubs and field trips are a big part of the Northstar experience. Extracurricular programs like these are often inaccessible to our students at traditional schools where the fast pace and lack of peer support can drive them away. At Northstar, students can enjoy these activities without pressure and frustration, while gaining a sense of school identity and pride.

Athletics

In addition to physical education and health classes, team sports are an important part of a child’s development. Our athletes learn good sportsmanship, the values of teamwork, working hard, overcoming difficulties, time management skills and most importantly, how to have fun! We have basketball teams for our Lower, Middle and Upper School students, including co-ed, all-girls and all-male teams. Our soccer program is also very popular, competing against other area schools in both spring and fall seasons, culminating in the “Classic Cup” between Northstar Academy and the Montessori School.

Field Trips

Field trips play an integral role in the educational experience, allowing students to extend what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their world. Students may ignite their imaginations at theaters, operas and museums, or take historical excursions to Jamestown, Williamsburg, Civil War sites and Washington, D.C. Science students may explore science museums or embark on a Chesapeake Bay adventure.  Students will also employ practical life skills on trips to the grocery store, department stores and local businesses.

Dances

Northstar offers several dances throughout the year, including a homecoming dance, holiday dance and Valentine’s dance. We also have a junior/senior prom located off site, where the junior and senior students enjoy a theme-based dance with great music, food and fun!

Chorus

Our music classes are a great form of self-expression and creativity. The Lower School music class enjoys lively action songs, singing games and an introduction to various instruments. Upper School students have music practices twice a week, singing a variety of songs from all music genres.Woodshop

Summer Camp

Our summer day camp for girls and boys starting at age five teaches cooperation, social skill development and flexibility. Small structured classes in language arts and math ensure that each child is a participant and not an observer. Each student participating in the summer camp program will also receive instruction in the area of social skill building. Our social skills curriculum encompasses role playing, group interaction and appropriate peer interaction. Please contact us to sign up for our next camp!
