Sam is 21 years old and recently completed his high school education. As he prepared for his transition to independence he was evaluated and found eligible for career training and job coaching through the Department of Rehabilitative Services.
Recognizing Sam’s passion for working with his hands, his DAR’s case manager reached out to Northstar Career Academy. In partnership with Sam and his DARS counselor an individualized program was developed to develop Sam’s skills and abilities to be successful in a construction and maintenance career track.
Sam now attends Career Academy for professional and practical skill development four days per week and spends a fifth day on site at a local furniture supply store where he works with his job coach and his hands to put furniture together and prepare it for delivery to customers. At the end of the year Sam will transition to part-time employment, at an appropriate level for his disabilities, at his current worksite where he will begin a career that celebrates and values his abilities.
Tyeisha’s family determined early on that they were going to educate her through home schooling. After 11 years of supporting her academic growth and achievement Tyeisha determined that what she wanted most was to become trained to care for other people providing healthcare. Uncertain of what this might look like her family decided to access Northstar Career Academy as a complimentary component of Tyeisha’s home schooling.
By partnering with Northstar Career Academy Tyeisha’s family provided her the opportunity to learn and explore that world of healthcare occupations through technical training and hands-on experience. Tyeisha came to the Career Academy three days a week and reported on-site with her job coach to a local adult day care center the other two days.
Today Tyeisha is preparing to complete her certification in Health Occupations and pursue her degree as a Certified Nursing Assistant before taking her next step towards becoming a Registered Nurse.
Javaid was ready to get to work when he graduated high school. Despite his many years of struggling through his academic career he was determined that he could find a job that would support him and get him out of the classroom.
With pride in his ambition, Javaid’s parents recognized that if he was to be successful he was going to need training and support to help him secure and sustain long-term career employment. Together they agreed that the solution was Northstar’s Career Academy.
Today, Javaid works part time at a local store as a grocery bagger. But his sights are set on doing more and growing in his career through completing the materials handling program at the Northstar Career Academy. In the morning Javiad works at the grocery in his paid role. But when afternoon comes Javiad reports two days a week to the career academy to advance his skills in inventory management, stocking, customer service and more. The other two days Javaid is supported by a job coach on-site who helps him put his skills to work and position himself for career advancement.
Jillian attends a local community college where she is completing foundation requirements before determining where she will focus her studies. After graduating with a standard diploma from a local public school that was able to successfully address her multiple learning disabilities, Jillian did not know what she wanted to do or what she was capable of, but hoped to some day work in a corporate office like her parents.
Given her learning disabilities Jillian was only able to manage part-time studies, however this opened the door for her to simultaneously learn practical career skills in business administration by enrolling in the Northstar Career Academy.
The Northstar Career Academy’s flexible model that offers morning and afternoon professional skills training and on the job work experiences affords Jillian the opportunity to explore her career interest with the support of a job coach and professional training, while also pursuing her foundation classes towards a business degree.
Travis is a thirteenth year senior. At the age of 20 he is looking forward to graduating from a nearby private day school. He has been attending a private day school due to emotional challenges that prevent him from being successful in a public school environment however the program lacks a Career Technical Education of interest to him.
Through his Individualized Education Plan Travis has been afforded the opportunity to pursue a certification in Hospitality at the Northstar Career Academy. Travis spends the morning at the Career Academy working three days/week at the academy developing both professional and practical skills. The other two days he goes on-site at a local hotel with his job coach where he puts those skills to work.
Afternoons Travis returns to his private day school setting to complete his core curriculum to complete his standard diploma requirements for graduation.
Anika is completing her senior year at a local public high school. She has always known that she wanted to care for animals but wasn’t sure if becoming a veterinarian was a realistic goal due to her intellectual disability. That is when her guidance counselor introduced her to Northstar Career Academy.
Today, Anika spends her mornings with her fellow seniors in her home school before coming to Career Academy for the afternoon. Three days a week she spends the afternoon at the Career Academy building her professional and technical skills in the Veterinary Assisting program while the other two days she is transported on-site to a local veterinary hospital where she puts her know found knowledge and skills to work.
When Anika graduates with her standard diploma in June she will also head out into the world with the training and ability to pursue her passion of working with animals as a certified veterinary assistant.
