Why Northstar?

We opened our doors in 1996 with 13 students and a belief that every child can learn when given the tools they need. At Northstar Academy, there are no learning disabilities – only learning differences.

Today, we have grown to nearly 100 students in grades K-12 from all over the Greater Richmond area. Unlike schools that address only one specific challenge, we focus on the whole child and serve students with a variety of learning differences. The result is a lively mix of students who appreciate each other’s unique talents as they learn and grow together.

Nurturing, student-centered atmosphere

Our nurturing, small class environment guarantees hands-on attention to each student, with a ratio of 1 teacher for every 8 students in our Upper School and 1 teacher to every 5 students in our Lower School. With a highly caring team of faculty and staff, our students receive the direct instruction and support they need to feel safe taking academic risks.

Personalized learning

We respect the uniqueness of each learner. Our students learn at their own pace, with personalized instruction that emphasizes their talents while strengthening areas of difficulty. Lessons are thematically based, using multisensory teaching techniques in the way that each child learns best. Empowered with an understanding of how they learn and think, Northstar students can meet new challenges with confidence.

Educating the whole child

At Northstar, we don’t stop with academics. We educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and instill confidence through academic, physical, emotional and social growth. That’s why all of our programs are woven with an emphasis on the development of social and life skills. We also offer popular extracurricular activities that are often inaccessible at traditional schools where the pace, lack of support and competition get in the way. Here, our students enjoy sports, clubs, dances and other activities to build teamwork, identity and a sense of pride that will last a lifetime.

Comprehensive academic program

Northstar offers a full K-12 academic curriculum, including intensive reading and writing programs, mathematics, science and social studies, as well as art, foreign language and technology. Whether preparing for college or for a specific vocation, our licensed educators and team of support specialists create an individualized academic plan for every child. Northstar Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Special Education Facilities.
